Denise Porter
My name is Denise Porter. In the Fall of 2018, I was appointed as a board member to the Grant County Digital Coalition. This group has a vital role in further developing communication within Grant County, Oregon. Modern communication is a necessity for our county to thrive in education, economic diversity, emergency services, and so much more.
Learning and being involved in my community have always been important to me. When I was 8 years old I decided I would be a teacher when I grew up. Attending Western Oregon State College (now University) to earn credentials in elementary education was my goal. Now, I have been teaching at Long Creek School for 28 years. My job is amazing! Every day, I hope to teach my students, and every day, my students teach me! It is always exciting to watch children learn and be a part of that learning.
Volunteering within my community to make it a better place has been a part of my everyday life for as long as I can remember. Early on community interaction was with my parents and brothers through our church and 4-H Club. In college, I was in Circle K—collegiate Kiwanis, as a club member at Western Oregon, and as a lieutenant governor for the Pacific Northwest District. In Long Creek, I have been involved in many projects through the school and community. I am a Long Creek city council member, president of the Long Creek Education Association, vice-president of the Long Creek Booster Club, Long Creek 4-H Photography Club leader, student government advisor at Long Creek School, co-chair of the Annual Emergency Services Appreciation Dinner, and training officer and certified firefighter for the Long Creek Volunteer Fire Department.
My husband Don and I own and operate an e-commerce mail order business in Long Creek, Oregon. Each of the activities I participate in at work and volunteering, offer me opportunities every day for learning and interacting with others to, hopefully, make our world a better place.
